Learn How to Fence

If you are new to fencing, the best way to start out is to take a group lesson offered by one of the local recreation departments. The cost for group lessons is reasonable and equipment is provided. Classes are available with the Montgomery County Department of Recreation and the DC Department of Recreation and Parks.

Most students, after having taken the beginning level class and determining that they wish to continue with the sport, can then sign up for the intermediate level class. During the intermediate level class, one can start purchasing some of the equipment. A glove would probably be the first item, followed by a weapon, mask, jacket, underarm protector, breast plates (for the women), and knickers. One might purchase an equipment bag to carry it all in and eventually electrical equipment for competition. Speak with the fencing master teaching your class for specific equipment recommendations.

After having taken the beginning and intermediate classes, one can continue to fence recreationally at either the Montgomery County Fencing Club or the Chevy Chase Fencing Club. It is fun to test one's skills against others in competition and the Chevy Chase Fencing Club is a more competitive, although friendly, club. Chevy Chase Fencing Club practices four times a week and private lessons from the fencing master are included in the club fees.

If you live outside the Washington, DC area, check out the US Fencing Association's web site which lists all member clubs, www.usfencing.org, for a referral to a program near you.
